Employers

As an employer, you have a legal duty under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 to ensure the safety of your workers.

This includes:

  • Carrying out a risk assessment before any work at height is undertaken.

  • Planning and organising work to ensure it’s carried out safely using the right equipment.

  • Providing appropriate fall protection systems such as edge protection or guardrails wherever a fall risk exists.

  • Ensuring workers are trained and competent, with adequate supervision and knowledge of the risks involved.

  • Regularly inspecting and maintaining equipment to ensure it remains safe to use.

  • Eliminating or minimising the need to work at height wherever possible.

Employees

As someone working at height, you also have a responsibility to look after your own safety and the safety of others:

  • Always follow training and instructions given by your employer or site supervisor.

  • Wear the correct PPE and fall protection as required.

  • Inspect your equipment before use and report any issues immediately.

  • Never take shortcuts or ignore safety protocols even if the task is small or seems low-risk.

  • Speak up if something doesn’t feel safe, your voice could prevent an accident.
